The Legend
5. Look at the legend.
Orienteering maps are not like the maps you may be accustomed to. For one thing, forested areas are indicated in white, not in green. Green areas are thicker woods. And dark green is marked "fight" for very thick underbrush.

Click the legend to view the high-res version.
Now, orient yourself to your surroundings. Look for familiar landmarks like lakes and roads. You can easily follow your way without a compass. Just look for distinguishing features in the map: the curve of a trail; a pile of rocks; the ruins of an old building.
