Pine Grove May 11, 2002 course results: White  Yellow  Orange  Green  Red  Meet director: Megan Donahue Meet volunteers: Mark Voit, Marilee and Michael Ball, Eddie Bergeron, Gary Dettinger, Brad Whitmore Course setters: Mike and Michelle Wenz (WYO), Jim Rayburn (GR) We opened Mother's Day weekend with a fine turnout for Pine Grove orienteering on a magnificent spring day: no clouds, no rain, pleasant temperatures. Volunteers and participants alike were appreciative after a relatively rainy and overcast season of spring orienteering. Two new members joined the Susquehanna Valley Orienteering club. The intermediate orange course proved to be the most popular with at least 16 competitors; it also was physically challenging, with 165 meters of climb over 4.4 km, the steepest course on the slate. Jim Browne, racing in the M75 category this year, smoked the green course in 94:03 for 1st place overall. Eddie Bergeron won the technically challenging red course in an even 84:00 over 7.5 km. Post-event discussions seemed to agree that there are more mappable features out there on the Pine Grove map than are represented on the map. ("Is this the stony ground?" "I wonder if this charcoal terrace is on the map?") The Pine Grove terrain was forgiving, however, with very little thick vegetation to impede progress, and wildflowers to make up for the moments of "I'm not lost, I'm just wandering." One large snake, possibly a copperhead, was spotted sunning itself across the white course trail. The last regular (non-ROGAINE) orienteering event of the season is June 8 at Rocky Ridge. It will include a Bike-O if the weather permits! See you there!
