Mont Alto May 20, 2001
course results:
White
Yellow
Orange
Brown
Green
Red
Blue
Bright sunny 60's until mid afternoon then 50's and light rain.
Blue was designed first with 16 controls 7.35k 365m - steeper and shorter than standard. The steepness is caused by the useable hillside (covering about 1.3 sq.km., 2 km along the hillside and 700m wide) having almost 30 contours top to bottom. The map was made by Eric Weyman and Pat Dunlavey in 1984 and with the exception of some vegetation creep is in remarkably good condition - better than many new maps. The terrain is subtile but not vague with many parallel possibilities, is mostly open and runable but frequently with a short sight distance. Challenging navigation problems can be set here and Mont Alto is not a good place to move up from orange. After running on easier maps, Mont Alto is often a jolt as all of our orienteering skills are needed here - much like Combat Village, South Fork or Great Falls. There are some rocky areas but very few mappable boulders, mountain laurel is the dominant vegitation feature, greenbriar and other uncomfortable vegitation is confined to a few tiny pockets and trails exist but do not control most of the area. The map does not change much with the seasons which makes it ideal for use this time of year when the rest of Quantico is getting thick. Eddie thought that an error free run on his part would take 65 min. He will be heading to Finland in July to participate with the US Orienteering team at the World Championships - as will Peggy Dickison of our club.
Red added a 17th control to get the length right but otherwise was a subset of blue - 12 controls 5.65k 265m. Jim Rayburn is getting very good very fast and is becoming a strong competitive factor in our area.
Green - 10 controls 4.2k 255m - and Brown - 8 controls 3.0k 185m - were also subsets of blue. Heidi had an excellent run and is becoming very competitive. Jim Browne was quickest on brown.
Orange, Yellow and White were set by John and Julie Kalloz of SVO and I'll refer you to their website and commentary. I want to thank Ken and Eddie for helping me pick up bags and signs as well as John and Julie for cooperating to make the event a success and a pleasure. Diana offered to pick up as well but we didn't have enough work - I am nevertheless appreciative.
