National Orienteering Day - Central Park May 6, 2001 course results: White  Yellow  Orange  As part of the celebration of National Orienteering Day, SVO held an event at County Central Park in Lancaster. The national organization, USOF, contributed banners, and Brunton Compass and Maptech furnished compasses and map software to be given away by lottery. Thirty people attended, almost all newcomers to the sport, and coming from as far away as Mt Airy MD and State College PA. The weather was perfect and everyone finished her/his course which made for an almost ideal day. The only fly in the pie was the rapid growth of stinging nettles on the Orange course. They were pretty inconspicuous two weeks earlier, but had an enormous growth spurt which became obvious as I hung the controls that morning. However they "only" were a factor on three of the controls and the runners were given the option of waving at these controls as they passed by. Some did, but others, perhaps training for Reality TV, went all the way in and punched. However, no negative comments and lots of good feedback about how enjoyable this strange sport was. We passed out membership forms and schedules, and hope we’ll see more of these people next Fall. High on the list of helpers were Nathalie Borozny, Scott Fitzpatrick, and Michelle and Mike Wenz.
