Gifford Pinchot State Park March 25, 2001 course results: White  Yellow  Runner's Challenge  Orange  Green  Red  Course Setter: Eddie Bergeron Meet Director: Brad Whitmore Helpers: Marilee + Mike Ball, Jim Browne, Brian Tuson The heavy rains from the previous week turned the trail from yellow 1 to 2 into the stream from 1 to 2. Nevertheless, this did not deter several people from finishing the Runners Challenge, though it may have kept Mark Voit from beating the 5 min/km standard. As you can see, the runners were largely a no-show, so the orienteers won pretty handily. Even the one "runner" (John Roemer) was an SVO member! One runner that did come out after seeing the ad we circulated to local running clubs was Sharon Shriver. She did the white course with her 6-year old daughter Carly. Several other newcomers also saw our ads in local newspapers so we actually had quite an influx of first timers. We hope to see them all in the future. Of particular note was Brian Tuson, a grad student at Penn State, who was one of the first people at the meet and one of the last to leave (picking up controls for us !). After trying the runners challenge on the yellow course he went straight to red, and did quite well on both (he had done a little orienteering several years ago at West Point). A few complaints about the wierdness of the map around red number 2 (works out right when you come in from the woods but about 100 meters too far in from the service road). Probably a black hole causing a spatial distortion in that area.
