The first Susquehanna Stumble of the new millennium was held at French Creek on the East map on 5/13/00. The weather was more than warm and the courses were long (18k for the long and 9k for the short). Despite the heat, 23 went off in a mass start for each of the courses.
About an hour later, the first runners came back through the Start/Finish area to either finish (short course), or exchange maps (long course). Eddie Bergeron, running the short course, appeared first (63:58) followed by Greg Balter (long course runner) in 64:30. First part of the long course was the same as the short course. Greg held on to his lead to be the eventual winner on long. However Joe Brautigam had a better second half, cutting Greg's lead from 190 seconds to 52.
Among the women, Pam James (who else?) was first on the long, followed by Peggy Dickison (who else?) as second woman. On the short stumble, Anne Fitch was first woman.
Recreational courses (W,Y,O) were also offered, and were won by Jerry Zimmer, Richard Eddy, and Charley Parker, respectively.
There has to be some recognition for Steve Tarry and Bruce Wong. Steve made a last minute decision to run and drove most of the night from NH to get here. Bruce, an Adventure Racer with no prior orienteering exposure, felt he needed some map skills for his sport, so bicycled out from Philadelphia, did a White course (too easy), did an Orange course (challenging) and then bicycled back to Philadelphia.
Maybe just a typical training day for him.
The courses were designed by Brad Whitmore (the Stumbles) and Jeff Whitehead (WYO). The former had several occasions where four controls were grouped in a cluster so that there was option for which order to visit them. This maybe helped to avoid following. I heard only good comments about all the courses, so congratulations to the course setters.
Helping out at the Start/Finish and picking up controls were: Richard and Erik Eddy, Marilee and Mike Ball, Eddie Bergeron, Dave Levine, Nathalie Borozny, and Jeff Whitehead. Our gratitude goes out to them as well as to Ian Whitmore who designed the honorific towels.
