Spectacular weather in December may be delightful for orienteers, but it is a mixed blessing for frantic meet directors and their overwhelmed volunteer crews. December 6 was one of the warmest and most beautiful December days on record here in Maryland, and the wonderful weather brought out a record crowd for the Mid-Atlantic Championships at Broad Creek. A total of 210 participants went out on the complete spectrum of courses, White through Blue, set by Dave Linthicum. Those who managed to stay out of the vicious briars along the southeast perimeter paid many compliments to the course setting.
Quantico Orienteering Club retained the coveted Broken Compass Trophy with a strong showing in all phases of the meet. They accumulated the most points on every course other than White, which was dominated by Troop 702, and Yellow, where they tied with DVOA. Quantico's #1 team also came away with the relay crown, as first-finishing SVO had to pay a five-minute penalty for not having a coed team.
Many thanks to all the on-the-spot volunteers who helped our skeleton crew cope with the marching armies of participants. I didn't catch all your names, but without you the meet would have been a disaster.
