Amidst a maze of American flags and purveyors of food supplements, a handful of brave orienteers discovered our registration desk after following a hastily deployed trail of streamers and the familar orange and white control bags. With the arrival of the first Green course runner, we heard what no meet director or course setter wants to hear: "The first control is in the wrong place." Course setter Mark Voit blasted out, and to his chagrin, discovered that the streamer he had set for the first control on the Green course had not been eaten by deer as he had guessed the day before, but marked the correct control setting while the control bag lay 70 meters away.
We anxiously awaited the arrival of the first competitor of each of the courses, but every other control was discovered in its proper position. The red course was judged to be "tough but fair" by veteran Brad Whitmore. The overcast and threatening weather kept many beginners and families away. Their instincts turned out to be correct as around 3:00 PM, the skies opened and a thunderstorm cell containing millions of gallons of water, cascading in drops the size of thick pencils, exploded over some of our more intrepid competitors, including yours truly running her first red course.
The rain forced a handful of us to conclude our adventures prematurely, hence the sprinkling of "DNF"s amongst the finishers. All in all, it was a good time nonetheless, with challenging courses and lovely woods. Kudos to all the SVO volunteers who donated their time during the day, in particular, Brad Gibson (who ventured out onto his first orange course this day!), Peter Irvin and his friend who staffed registrations for the first 2 1/2 hours of the day. Special thanks to Marilee and Mike Ball and Brad Whitmore for running starts and picking up controls in the rain. It's the volunteer work that makes these events possible!
Mark Voit set all the courses, driving up from Baltimore several times to scout the area and plan each course. He drew the lion's share of the maps as well. I think we'll forgive him for the mis-set control. This once. :)
