Mont Alto State Park May 31, 1998 course results: White  Yellow  Orange  Brown  Green  Red  Blue  Meet Director/Course Setters: Drew Richardson (W,Y,O) - Francis Hogle (Br,G,R,B) Helpers: Registration: Glen Brake, Sam Listwak, Tom Delaney Control pickup: Eddie Bergeron, Brad Whitmore Course drawing: Dave Levine, Ray Lucas, Harry Payne, Brad Whitmore The day was warm, muggy, and buggy and the mountain laurel was in full bloom. White, Yellow, and Orange courses were set by Drew Richardson, his first course setting adventure for SVO. All three courses were shorter than normal in terms of point to point measurements, but featured more climb than is normal for these courses. Yellow and Orange courses generally rewarded folks who stuck to the trails and handrails (big features like gullies and fields) and penalized folks who tried the direct route. Francis Hogle did the advanced courses. The partnership with SVO made life easier for both clubs and resulted in better than average attendance. Quantico offered Brown, Green, Red and Blue with a total of 16 bags. The map (the part we used) was beautiful and technically difficult. While the day was hot (upper 80's by late afternoon) it was the usual several degrees cooler than elsewhere; a strong breeze helped too. While once around was plenty for most of the people on this hot day, note that Brian Foster did not get enough of a workout on green and went back out again on blue! The most impressive runs of the day were John Vallim on green (just 53 minutes) and Ted Good on blue (79 minutes).
