First Annual Susquehanna Stumble Pine Grove Furnace State Park May 9, 1998
course results:
Long Stumble
Short Stumble
White
Yellow
Orange
Meet Director: Brad Whitmore
Course Setter: Mihai Veres
Helpers: John and Scott Kalloz, Marilee and Mike Ball, Christine Ritchie, Megan Donahue, Ken Walker Sr., Dave Levine, Mark Voit, boy scouts (sorry I don't have names), Diane Gilmore.
The rainy spring weather took a 10 hour break at just the right time, allowing us to sneak in the event without getting the competitors too wet (the same cannot be said for Mihai and Brad who put the controls out). The high water resulted in a change for the short- and long-stumble courses since we were unable to build the temporary bridge we had planned. This added about 1.5 km and more road running than is optimal for normal orienteering, but the dogleg made it easier to see how you were doing relative to the rest of the field which people seemed to enjoy. The format and the courses appeared to be a real hit.
This was the first meet I can recall where we had no one run the white course. I think they all stayed away due to the weather. The Kalloz's won both the yellow and orange courses and then stayed around to help run the start and finish. Thanks! Several groups of boy scouts ran the yellow course nearly all finishing within about 20 minutes of each other. They also set up the tarps over the start table, which is probably why it stopped raining for the rest of the day.
Most people ran the Long- rather than Short-Stumble and I heard very good comments about both courses. Agnar Renden from Norway won the Short-Stumble with a per km time of 8.4 min/km, only slightly slower than Mark Voit on the Long-Stumble (8.3 min/km). The defining leg on the Long-Stumble was clearly number 2. The split log shows two runners with splits of 13 minutes, and the other 8 people that recorded splits in the range 21 - 31 minutes . The favorite, Benetis Vytenis (a cadet at the Naval Academy visiting originally from Lithuania I believe) was one of the people who made a big error on number 2 and our own Mark Voit had a relatively error-free run and was able to hold Ben off. Mark is a strong road runner and did not mind the extra distance on the road at all, but also showed he is increasingly good in the woods too. Mark recently won his age group (M35A) at each of the two national meets this spring, and is really making a name for himself. Peggy Dickison's 3rd place finish was no surprise, since she has won the U.S. Women's National Championship more times than I care to count. Peggy even spotted the field almost 20 minutes minutes by taking 31 minutes to number 2, and then ran through almost the entire field to finish 3rd!. Jim Eagleton was one of the very few people that did number 2 well (13 minutes) and used this advantage and some steady orienteering to finish 4th.
One of the unique things about this meet (besides the format that included both normal crossing-country orienteering and "windows" with either 4 or 5 controls that could be taken in any order) was that prize money was offered to the top 3 male and top female finisher on the long stumble. This is common in Europe (with much larger sums of course) but the only case I am aware of in the U.S. is the Crystal Relay which is part of the Rocky Mountain 1000 day. The prize money goes to the club to support the competitors travel and training expenses. While the amount is small, it is a start. The long-term goal if this becomes common would be to make it possible for a few US orienteers to support themselves enough to seriously train and compete at the international level. Only then are we likely to be competitive on the world orienteering scene.
