It was a dark and stormy night - well, a dark and drizzly morning, and it turned out to be one of the more unusual events I've been to.
The controls were carefully hung and direction signs put in place by 9AM, and fifteen minutes later two of the controls were missing as well as one of the direction signs. And the park seemed deserted. I started scouting all the trash cans, but no luck, so I replaced the missing items and sat down to wait for the helpers and participants.
The helpers arrived - the Crawfords(Merle, Grag and Chris), Marny Schultz, and Paul Willcox. Lots of dead time till some Boy Scouts arrived. They were registered, instructed, and sent off. To their great credit, they got to the 1st control, found no flag there, but were unfazed and went on to find all the rest.
They were followed Chris Crawford going out for the first time on his own. Then Sarah Levine arrived with Dave, and after lots of Duck and Geese conversation, off they went on the course.
Then following a burst of intuition, Marny and I went to the park headquarters, inquired, and found that a maintenance person had picked up the missing equipment while making early rounds. We got them back. and the event instantly went from a money loser to a slight winner.
Everyone finished the course well; went home reasonably dry, and the results are noted below.
