The weather was great and the number of participants was more manageable than last spring (when nearly 100 people showed up). This time 34 people received an introduction to the sport of orienteering and some basic map reading instruction before heading out on the White course designed by Mark Frank over a decade ago.
For the first time at this event, two orienteers got seriously lost. They headed the wrong direction leaving the second control and continued over and down the hill quite some ways before they realized their error. At that point, they attempted to use the Escape Bearing printed on the map and continued until they found a dirt road. When the dirt road met a paved road, they turned right (away from the center!) and began walking. The first phases of a search were nearly complete when they were found by the Bishop family five and a half miles from the start. Although this story has a happy ending, it points out the care which we must all show when we are in the woods. After their initial mistake, the group did well to get out to the road, but after that they should have stayed put to make the search easier. If the Bishops hadn't recognized the orienteers, it might have been another hour or more before they were found and the search would have begun to involve many more people.
Our thanks go out to Scott Hackenburg of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for his help with the event in general and the search in particular. We hope to see the lost-and-found orienteers in the woods in the future, but perhaps showing a bit more restraint than when they took off to the third control this time.
